Ivanka Trump evokes the importance of women’s involvement in peace

During the roundtable discussion with the Senate Foreign Relations on June 11 2019, Senior White House Advisor Ivanka Trump speaks about why more women should get involved in the process of making peace.

The roundtable was joind by Republican Sens. Jim Risch and Shelley Moore Capito, Democratic Sens. Ben Cardin and Jeanne Shaheen and U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Mark Green and officials from the State and Defense Departments.

Trump said firmly “When women meaningfully participate in peace negotiations, the likelihood that the resulting peace will endure more than 15 years increases by 35%.”

Her reasoning behind the argument was that they help lead more effective arguments. Participants supported Trump’s idea describing the strategy bringing both social justice for women around the world and national security for Americans as well.

“The United States has a great deal of influence around the world, and we can make a difference on this equation, and if we change those metrics to be much more balanced, I am very confident we’re going to have a more stable world, and U.S. national security will be protected by that.” said Cardin.

In order to achieve improvements in those two realms, Trump announced the Administration has hired a Director of International Organizations to work on the strategy to making more women join in the peace process. She also said new metrics would be announced to track progress from various development agencies within 90 days.

According to a research conducted by the United Nations, women made up just 2% of meditators, 8% of negotiators and 5% of witnesses and signatories in major peace talks from 1990 to 2017. Although women take up half of the whole population, the number of women involved in making world peace possible is significantly small. With more number of women being involved in the peace process, the future of world peace would be much brighter.
